JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE: Manual Machinist NUMBER OF POSITIONS: 2 SALARY LEVEL: Hourly SHIFT: Day Shift   DEPARTMENT: FAB LOCATION: Tullahoma, TN EMPLOYEE: REPORTS TO: Shop Supervisor US CITIZENSHIP REQUIRED   SUMMARY: Performs precision set ups for tight tolerance parts on machines such as Mills, Lathes, Cylindrical and Surface Grinders, Jig Bore, and EDM machines. This position requires a high degree of skill and experience, and top pay will be offered if the candidate meets the qualifications.   ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:  
  • Must be able to set up and operate necessary manual machine tools for precision part specifications to include but not limited to Lathes, Milling Machines, and precision Grinders.
  • Interprets blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications.
  • Will utilize machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments to ensure parts meet work order specifications.
  • Responsible for standard shop computations related to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds, etc.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes’ dimensions and reference points to lay out parts for machining.
  • Be observant, detail oriented and accurate.
  • Maintain the work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition and follow prescribed safety regulations.
  • Participate in 5-s and lean activities as required.
  • Keep supervisor advised of work status, workload, problems, and progress as related to work assignments.
  • Performs related duties as needed by supervision.

  • Assembly and Sheet metal fabrication experience is a plus.
  • Welding experience is a plus.
  • CNC experience is a plus.
  • Must have a good command of the English language, both written and verbal.

SUMMARY: Set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. Precision machinist who can fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments. Must be able to fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.   ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES include the following:
  • Calculate dimensions or tolerances, using instruments such as micrometers or vernier calipers.
  • Machine parts to specifications, using machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, planers, and precision grinders to make metal parts, mechanisms, tools or machines to exact tolerances and dimensions.
  • Set up, adjust, or operate basic or specialized machine tools used to perform precision machining operations.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, or materials onto machines
  • Measure, examine, or test completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments, such as micrometers.
  • Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
  • Maintain machine tools in proper operational condition.
  • Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, or engineering information to determine methods or sequences of operations needed to fabricate products
  • Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency.
  • Check work pieces to ensure that they are properly lubricated or cooled
  • Diagnose machine tool malfunctions to determine need for adjustments or repairs.
  • Program computers or electronic instruments, such as numerically controlled machine tools
  • Confer with engineering, supervisory, or manufacturing personnel to exchange technical information.
  • Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock to display placement of cuts
  • Fit and assemble parts to make or repair machine tools.
  • Dispose of scrap or waste material in accordance with company policies and environmental regulations.
  • Separate scrap waste and related materials for reuse, recycling, or disposal.
  • Dismantle machines or equipment, using hand tools or power tools to examine parts for defects and replace defective parts where needed
  • Confer with numerical control programmers to check and ensure that new programs or machinery will function properly and that output will meet specifications.
  • Support metalworking projects from planning and fabrication through assembly, inspection, and testing, using knowledge of machine functions, metal properties and mathematics.
  • Design fixtures, tooling, or experimental parts to meet special engineering needs
  • Test experimental models under simulated operating conditions for purposes such as development, standardization, or feasibility of design.
  • Install experimental parts or assemblies, such as hydraulic systems, electrical wiring, lubricants, or batteries into machines or mechanisms.
  • Be observant, detail oriented, exact and highly accurate when machining parts
